Getting Started

When it comes to finding a new home, here are the first steps you need to take to get started:

Find an experienced real estate agent – the first step for anyone planning to buy a new home is finding an experienced, reliable real estate agent in your area, such as the ones at Coakley Realty. We can help you find the best home for your lifestyle and budget in the DC Metropolitan area.

Make a list of priorities – this is incredibly important to your house hunt! The best way we’ve found to do this is to have you and your spouse sit down separately and create a list of priorities in your new home—this includes the location, number of rooms, school districts, etc.—and then compare them with one another to create a master list. Don’t worry too much about whether #3 should come before #4, just be sure #3 isn’t swapped with #30. This master list will help your real estate agent understand what you’re looking for and what is most important for you in a new home.

Research area schools, doctors, etc. – a key component of finding a new home is being familiar with the area to which you’re going to be living. It’s very important to research the local area schools, doctors, and other services to make sure that everything meets your standards and needs.

Get pre-approved for a mortgage loan – this step is crucial! You won’t really know what you’re looking for until you have a budget. Getting pre-approved for a mortgage loan lets your real estate agent know exactly what price range to stay in.
